i truly just don't think a privacy-oriented, non ad-based web can be free to access under capitalism. either we need to pay to access websites or websites fund themselves through the sale of user data. the only other alternative is distributed, low-traffic, user-operated webpages etc. like the fediverse but even that is just a drain on money and resources. the world agreed early on in the history of the internet that the web should be free to use, and thus as the load grew, financing a free web involved the sale of user data. it's just a given that web services are free to use. i just think that needs to change tbh. i already pay for cohost and i pay for my search engine (kagi). but most people arent gonna want to do that
