So when I was a little kid, we had a Commodore VIC-20 for a while, and then pretty quickly moved to a 286-based PC-AT compatible desktop and then added a NES, reifying the "PC/console" split within our household. Anyway, the point is, those early, everything-in-a-wedge-shaped-keyboard hook-it-to-your-TV 6502- and Z80-based systems are fixed in my memory as "old and clunky" (affectionate).
But as a teen in the '90s, I discovered the Shadowrun TTRPG, and thence Neuromancer and the whole genre of cyberpunk. As a result, the idea of a ~cyberdeck~ occupies a completely separate section of my brain from the old, early, 1980s PCs I experienced in my American childhood.
All of this to say: some years ago I happened randomly to learn about the Amstrad CPC 464, a UK-made Z80-based PC from the 1980s, sold in Europe. Now this is a fucking cyberdeck. Look at this thing! It's not a beige wedge, it's a black slab.
I desperately want one of these, I don't care if the computer actually works as long as the case, keycaps and switches, and tape mechanism are functional. I want to stick a Raspberry Pi or something inside there and put guitar strap buttons on the ends so I can sling it over my shoulder like a fucking cyberdeck.
And wire a stereo out jack to the tape deck so I can plug it into speakers, obviously.
