i've been ignoring recent cross-site meta because it is so massively pointless but i just saw someone on bluesky say it's unreasonably idealistic for cohost staff to not want to use volunteer labor because a social media website is by its nature about other people voluntarily making stuff on your platform that draws in more users, as if it's perfectly natural to draw an equivalence between me doing unpaid professional work on or with this site's functions and me logging in to write "WHAT DO YOU CALL A SUITCASE MADE OUT OF A GIANT RED FRUIT? A PORTMANTEAUMATO!!!!"

(as capitalism dissolves the boundaries between work and leisure to render the latter more easily into a site of extraction) well this makes my playtime feel more important so i'll allow it to be naturalized

Mastodon has so many people who run their instances on a random VPS while using mutualized storage solutions being baffled that running stuff when it’s your job is more expensive. It’s the Website equivalent of people swearing you can do professional work with GIMP instead of Photoshop.

I genuinely recommend not looking for what other people are saying unless you want to be mad because its all full of incredibly off-base analysis and "conclusions" about what must be going on. They're all just feeding into the outrage/feelings of moral superiority machine...

no wait hang on you’re cooking— i should get paid for the time i spend going to the grocery store because i’m performing valuable labor for them by bringing in customers……

i have no idea what you are talking about, but sure!

also grocery stores as we know them are a very modern invention and they really should pay me for spending hours wandering around trying to find the thing they moved so that i will be encouraged to buy more crap

anyway, i was asking how volunteering labor was somehow off limits while accepting people's money was not as that was the topic at hand

"if posting generates value for companies, posting should be considered labor."
"so you think people should be paid for posting by the companies profiting off their labor?"
"god no. we should lower the value of all other labor to match this new wage floor."
