A feature of borderline personality disorder is "splitting," where people are categorized as all-good or all-evil, and the categorization flip flops back and forth constantly. I feel like in some circles, political discourse has reached a weird point where this sort of cognitive distortion is not only expected, but demanded of people.

I noticed this recently when some YouTubers I follow - I don't love them like I want to make a new religion out of them, I follow them because they reliably produce inoffensive background noise - had a non-political but annoying Hot Take that I didn't agree with, so I stopped watching that particular video

(This sounds so vague it's like I'm trying to hide something. It was TwoSet Violin being snotty about contemporary music.)

and then saw a ton of people on social media competing to declare who had known they were Evil All Along, to name an earlier and earlier point in the career of these two guys who make shovelware epic violinist reaction content that they'd smelled the Toxicity Within

and I really really do not care if you enjoy TwoSet's millionth episode of "Violinist BLOOPERS - 😂try not to pizzicato😂"

but what bothered me was the mentality that they had always been evil reactionary haters, but had previously been cunningly disguising it. that this video wasn't a bad decision but a revelation of the True Self. that's the mentality I see way too often (and have probably participated in tbh) and it's not a healthy way to think about other human beings.
