So these days I've been really enjoying sobacha (roasted buckwheat tea) and mugicha (roasted barley tea). And coffee is roasted coffee beans. So I started thinking "I bet I could roast all kind of shit and make drinks out of it!"

So this morning I tried roasting sesame seeds! Now, the sesame we get from the supermarket is already lightly roasted, but I wanted it to roast more. Never done it before but it was very easy.
I let that seep for 4 minutes in 90°C water, and it's very good! At least, it tastes good to me who already likes sobacha and mugicha. Not my favorite of the three, but definitely a drink I'd be happy to make again.
I tried to see if maybe that was already a drink that had a -cha name (or a similar tea suffix), but couldn't find anything. But I do see it's common to blend green tea and sesame together, so I think I'll try that next! I'm out of sencha at the moment, but I do have some kukicha so I'll see how that goes with sesame (perhaps kukicha would taste best with the sesame that's only slightly roasted? 🤔 oh nooo I'll have to try booooth). I've never made a custom blend before, that's exciting! (yes this is very simple 2-ingredients blend we're talking about)

As you can see I'm not actually a genius, I certainly didn't invent anything new, but it feels very satisfying to make something yourself and to see so many more paths to explore!

If you're interested, you can get a horoku (sometimes written hojiki or rarely houroku, the latter I think by error) and use it to roast basically anything conveniently. Nice little device
