there are so many youtube video essayists that i like the videos of but who don't really know how to structure an essay. most of the time this is harmless but sometimes this is actively irritating and takes away from the essay of the whole.

good video essays are sometimes improved without structure and some actually have the opposite problem where they over-structure to make it look like they're saying a lot when they're actually just repeating the same talking points over and over again, but i feel like generally speaking it helps to having a somewhat coherent and organised "point" to the video, even if it doesn't get resolved. even if a video essayist ends up deciding that they want a less structured video, understanding structure as something to actively think about rather than just defaulting on putting words down the way they originally came out still helps with this.

that being said, just because it isn't to my taste, doesn't mean it isn't good. besides even video essays that are genuinely terrible often have some thought provoking points in them and to judge people for not learning techniques would be pretty hypocritical of me given i'm a guy with no understanding of basic art skills who nevertheless posts my drawings to the internet. so idk, go forth and post shit to the internet i guess.
