The royal treasury of China is robbed and only one man is talented enough to solve the crime: the Killer Constable!
Man this movie is wild. I don't think it's GOOD. The action pieces are often pretty bland. New characters appear in the story with absolutely no background or explanation, then die. The film has an obsession with showing off reflective surfaces of weapons like they're mirrors. For a detective film, there's very little detecting. The characters wander around rural China seemingly randomly bumping into the perpetrators of the crime, who admit their guilt moments before they die.
However, the final 30 minutes of the film are very entertaining! There's a fight scene in the rain and mud that is truly excellent. And the very last fight scene has multiple long-take shots that really show off some stunning choreography. And they actually start to give some of the characters motivation and depth.
I guess my primary criticism would be that there's not enough detective work. I'm not expecting Detective Dee or Sherlock Holmes. Just something basic demonstrating to the audience WHY the characters are going where they're going or how they found the bad guys they're chasing.
The first half didn't have me, but I greatly enjoyed the second half. I'm finding that has been happening a lot in the wuxia genre!
