This movie is SO MUCH FUN! The Spider Clan, the dangerous poisoners of the martial world, are seeking to regain their position of power through the ultra-powerful weapon known only as The Spider! The result is a lot of confusion as our heroes try to figure out what the fuck is going on and the Spider Clan deals with internal politics.
The effects are absolutely atrocious, with stock footage of a tarantula whenever The Spider is activated, lots of fog effects, and sparks. But it's atrocious in that fun "you can tell they were working with the tools at hand and just having a blast" way. There's a scene where a good guy sneaks into a trapped tomb to find The Spider before the villains can. It's extremely "Spirit Halloween" and is just so much fun.
The hero of the story Fei Ying Hsiung is always entertaining in his scenes because he is so fucking confused at all times. And I don't blame him! The plot is surprisingly convoluted. He ends up accidentally marrying the princess of the Spider Clan without even knowing! Despite the fact that he proposed to her WHILE INSIDE THE SPIDER CLAN BASE. It's great stuff.
The action scenes are on the lower end of the spectrum for this genre. There are a couple of cool fight scenes and there's a lot of verticality to the movement, with characters jumping multiple stories. But for the most part, the fights aren't as impressive as other wuxia films I've seen.
That being said, this is an absolutely fantastic "B-movie night" kind of movie. And you'd better believe I'm stealing that Spider Tomb idea for my RPG games.
