The alternate title for Killer Clans should be: EVERYBODY WANTS UNCLE DEAD

The plot for this movie is an odd mixture of convoluted and highly simple. On the basic level, Uncle is the leader of a powerful clan of martial artists and for a variety of reasons a lot of people want him dead. This includes paid assassins, rival clans, and his own family. And the story follows their schemes and the twists as people reveal their allegiances. I would say it's convoluted because it seems like every single scene with exposition features someone switching sides or revealing that they're a double agent.

I think once you get in on the joke (everybody is the opposite of what their allegiance originally was or has some kind of scheme set in motion decades ago) it becomes fairly entertaining and even comedic. There was a scene where a character escapes through a trap door HIDDEN IN THEIR BED. Not under their bed. That would be too normal. Instead, a center square of the bed rotates, allowing them to escape. Oh and that's not all! The trap door leads to a tunnel where an ally has been waiting for fifteen years, just in case, to help. Shit like that happens all the time in this film!

My biggest gripe has to be the fight scenes. There's really not that many in this film and the ones on display aren't that impressive. I think a lot of it comes down to choreography and continuity between shots. The fights feature lots of cuts (an oddity, considering other Chor Yuen-directed films lavish in their extended action shots) and the continuity of motion and character location often totally change. So you'll get shots where two people are fighting, person A looks like they are winning and person B is on the ropes, then the next shot happens and now person B is leading the attack and person A is losing. When this happens, it becomes difficult to remain invested in the outcomes of fights.

I think there is fun to be had with this film for sure, but I would recommend other Chor Yuen wuxia films like Web of Death, Swordsman and Enchantress, Sentimental Swordsman, and Clans of Intrigue over it. Those films all feature similar campy action, excellent sets, and stupidly amusing twists, but with superior choreography.
