As you travel, you notice that the noises of the forest cease. The birds and insects stop their humming and chirping. Everything is oddly still. Then, the sound of an explosion in the distance, followed by an ear-piercing roar. Within moments, chaos erupts. The animals that had stilled in an attempt to hide themselves burst into a frightened frenzy fleeing the great sound. Flocks of birds liter the skies as terrified deer bound around you. Even the rodents underfoot travel elsewhere for safety.
You hunker down against a great pine in an attempt to assess the situation before blindly fleeing. Your patience is rewarded with the aural-scraping cry of some monstrosity overhead. The large shadow, wide, leading ahead of this flighted beast. As it passes over, the wings beat, releasing gusts of wind against the ground. Several tree-branches overhead crack and detach, adding to the mayhem as they fall nearby.
Through the trees you can finally make out the form of this creature. It is a great blue dragon. Dozens of feet long, fully grown and hunting. Massive teeth, sharp as daggers and just as long, are revealed as it opens its mouth once more. From its maw, light flares, and then a great flash as a bolt of lightning tears into the earth. The trees conduct this energy and burst apart into showers of smoldering splinters with resounding cracks. This dragon is hunting and you are in its territory.
What do you do?
- Run. Perhaps the deer and squirrels and birds have the right idea.
- Stay. Flatten yourself against this tree, let it pass.
- Create a distraction. Perhaps a fire could attract its attention, allowing you to slip away.
