Lancer has become a real favorite of mine in the combat department! We've also tried the 'bond' system for it as well and if you wanna run more narrative encounters. I suggest that, but considering how long we played without it and how much fun we had anyway it's definately not neccessary :3
Have y'all run any modules? If so, do you have any that you could recommend?
We've only played the one module actually: Soltice Rain which is intended to be an introductory adventure that is pretty self-contained so that you can continue from it either with your own material or perhaps branching into No Room for a Wallflower. As a beginner module it's really cool, but since it only covers Licence Levels 0-1 players won't get to play the mechs they may have their hearts set on, and will have to run with Everest, Sagmartha, or Chonolungma (which are all awesome and good mechs in their own way, but it's really only those three options for now)
No Room for a Wallflower is unfinished, saddly, as it only has it's first part but does stretch through a good few months of sessions, and does have a draft up with stuff that you have to fill in the blanks for.
There's also Dustgrave but that's a module designed for advanced pilots who know a good bit about what they and their teammates are doing.
If you do decide to run your own material however, I highly suggest using the Oracles from Starforged as inspiration or straight out to design worlds and factions. We did that and came up with an incredibly compelling and cool solar system for our game to take place in, without having to load on way too much work!
I will also tell you that it is difficult to run as a true one-shot as the game is balanced around a 2-4 part mission structure. Each scenario (combat) in a mission is going to take 2-3 hours. depending on the mission perameters, how smoothly the mission goes, and how fast the players take their turns (new players will take a solid moment unless they're very familiar with tactical action games like 4th Ed or others)
As well, our group takes about 2-3 hours to roleplay before we get into a mission, and 1-2 hours to roleplay mid-mission. If you're just focused on the combat period you can probobly bash out 2 scenarios (three if everyone is paced pretty well) in one 4-6 hour game. If you're only playing 2 hr sessions, you're absolutely only going to have 1 or 1/2 of a fight per session.
