There are SO MANY minifigs in my collection. That's generally where the money is in old Lego. You're looking for specialized parts/colors from sets with few printings (or exclusive to 1 set!) and you're looking for minifigs.
And when those minifigs happen to be exclusive to one set, then it makes sense that they would be valuable!

I used to like Hot Wheels when I was a kid! But I don't really have much interest in them anymore. I do like watching the restoration/repainting videos people put out for them!
