Those are some very valid critisicms. FFXIV is a game I absolutely love, but boy does it have some glaring flaws. The gameplay is one of them. I love the story and dialogue and all of the characters, but there has got to be a better, more fun way to tell it. WoW has some great, fun quest designs. If only the two games could merge to have the fun gameplay of WoW with the amazing characters, music, and story from FFXIV...

I still think the way dungeons and trials are done in FF14 is exceptional. It's a ton of fun and I really appreciate the designs. Healing in FF14 so great!

I still enjoy the game a lot! I really hope that comes across. Honestly I don't think I would have put nearly this much effort into this post if I didn't care so much about this game.

That’s an interesting take. I really loved Endwalker if only because it solidified in my mind that it has the best Final Fantasy party in the post-PS1 era, and I feel like every character got a moment to shine. It’s honestly been difficult to go back since finishing the MSQ last year, because it felt like such a culmination of everyone’s journey together, and everyone going their separate ways at the end makes it hard to go back to see whatever they’re setting up for the future.

But some of your story criticisms are of parts I don’t even remember, which shows how much of an impact the actual plot had on me, lol. I just want to hang out at that Sharlayan cafe and watch the party interact. It’s the reason I love Persona games so much.

And yeah, the MSQ gameplay has always been rough. It’s why it took me years to actually play beyond ARR. It really does need to mix up the quest gameplay better, though with how successful the game’s been I don’t know if they really have any incentive to do so - it seems like they’ve just got a formula for expansions at this point.

I still posit that the the duty/trial/raid content is genuinely the best in the genre. Even really mediocre/unmemorable side-dungeons have fun boss mechanics.

I really love Alphinaud and I would do anything to protect and diaper that little dork.

The game is falling into tropes but I think it's what the fans want since most FF's unfold like this. (Walking to the end was similar to "You're Not Alone" from FF9)

The story telling takes too many pauses to stand around and talk IMO. They should really adopt a more walk and talk style of story telling. (I highly doubt they will ever do this because the game is trying to be accessible to all.) Movement is good! Walk and talk, battle and talk. Reading paragraphs upon paragraphs upon paragraphs hitting next can get tiring and will cause people to miss details upon completion due to fatigue.

Having played since ARR release, I feel like EW has been the weakest story expansion thus far, and we share similar opinions on it. Especially funny was the heroic music playing non-stop while you did nothing heroic during your second tour of Labyrinthos lol.

I don't envy the writers/designers for trying to figure out how to put in character growth, chill out moments, frightful bad stuff, action, and lore into a linear MMO story. The basic conceit of the design basically acknowledges that it's going to sometimes be clunky. But they did a good enough job writing it that I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Also you are right, Labyrinthos is a really weird zone and I wish they would find some way to turn off the action music.

I made a macro

Basically it's

/tomestone action

/bgm

This will act as a toggle for bgm plus your character will do a cute animation while it toggles. (This cell phone emote is from using the ff14 app)

Can also use /voice for vox and /sfx for sound effects. I use three macros to adjust sound on the fly without needing to go into menus.

I can understand where you're coming from Snazzy. I think the whole "I'mma wipe people's minds" was just a way to say "No matter what you do in the past, it doesn't matter." But I thought of it as a flashy way to do a flash back instead of "Echo, tell me everything." I do wonder what the future of the game will be after we literally saved the universe. XD

I totally get why they had to wipe their minds. They wanted to close the loop to prevent another alternate timeline or time paradoxes. I just think there could have been better ways to go about doing it.

But really that just ties into my whole complaint about Elpis as an area and all the stuff it introduced.

I'm excited to see what happens! I'm perfectly fine with more scaled-down (for FF) conflicts and characters.

All very good points! I really liked how they handled Garlemald in a narrative sense: having them go through another war of succession, their nationalism fueling a particularly nasty primal, that the population is -still- xenophobic and distrustful when we arrive to offer aid. I think what hurts it is that so much of that process of self-destruction happened off-screen when we were on the First, and when we do finally get there having just the one zone that needs to contain so much makes the place feel small. I really love that the capital is utterly ruined from the first moment that we set foot there, but I wish we'd gotten a whole zone that was urban ruins to help it feel more like a proper metropolis. Make the areas on the outskirts their own zone, or be little instanced/scenarios or whathaveyou.

I do have to say that I'm with you on Elpis. Even speaking as someone that really -does- like time travel as a trope, and enjoyed a lot of the moments and conversations we got to have with Emet and Venat and Hythlodaeus, it did feel very... self-indulgent and fanfiction-y. And the fact that it is a time-travel thing meant they had to awkwardly work in the memory wipe machine. Also wasn't huge on having Hydaelyn as a trial.

Endwalker was still full of a -lot- of incredible stuff (and still has 3 major content patches to go, so I don't feel like I can render a final judgment), but I do think it's ultimately going to wind up in 2nd place behind Shadowbringers in my mind.
