Is it cheating if I make a brush that draws in different blend modes for shading and lighting so I can get nice effects on my digital painting? Is there like an analogue to this with real mediums? Maybe I just need to focus on color theory stuff and use a scratch pad more to test color combos before committing. I’m trying to keep it as authentic as possible, but also I’m rapidly approaching the “fuck it” stage where I just buy a set of acrylics and start For Real painting in my physical sketchbook.
I’ve got some posca paint markers I’ve hardly used since I bought them, I should mess with those again

in reply to @sofia-drawsmore's post:

this doesn't sound like cheating. I did feel like painting the background to my digital painting thing after the fact was "cheating" a lil but that's why it's called digital painting, very different medium to the physical one. I think if we all play to our strenghts and embrace the differences between mediums and try to be honest in that, it's never cheating, just shortcuts to make expressing ourselves easier, if that makes sense. sorry for the mini ramble, hope your experimenting with physical stuff is productive and fun for ya

There's two answers for any question that involves "cheating" in art:

  • No it isn't, and you should do it

  • Yes it is, and you should do it anyway

Everyone has tricks and shortcuts, no one is a machine, save any amount of work you can do to focus on what's truly important in your art and not ruin your health
