Doom Infinite is a roguelike mod for Doom 2 on GZDoom that gives it a gameplay loop similar to Risk of Rain 2. I've been pretty hooked on it.


You visit the levels of Ultimate Doom (and also Dead Simple from Doom 2) in random order, and you have to gather a certain number of "souls" before you can leave. Enemies spawn in randomly, and get stronger as the "curse" meter fills, with variants such as enemies that are invisible, can teleport Goku style, bleed toxic sludge, and more. However, random items also spawn in, from stimpacks to megaspheres.

Between each level is a nexus where you can break open a crate to give you a Risk of Rain style item that increases your stats, adds some secondary effect, or gives you equipment you can use on cooldown. (A good handful of these give a downside too.) The nexus also has some bonus rooms that give you a challenge such as pressing switches or fighting a small horde of enemies for another crate, or sometimes just a sphere.

Then there's weapons. Sometimes they spawn with modifications to them like better stats or different ammo types, and you can further modify weapons with modpacks to tinker with them yourself. It's a lot of fun, but modpacks are rare. As an example, the thing that killed me in that screenshot there was a rocket launcher I found with "atom bomb" ammo; I asked "huh what does that do". Well, it fires an atom bomb, is what it does.

I hit a point in this mod where I was one-shotting cyberdemons, which were beginning to spawn regularly, with a super shotgun.

It's a very well thought out mod. I've been consistently surprised and pleased with it.
