i guess one downside of making a lot of a video game be part of one or more Progression Systems is that it kinda incentivises only doing things that are part of those progression systems.

it's even worse when there's something fun gated behind that progression and getting to that point in profession is your main goal in playing. it's like, making a game where you burn yourself out doing the frustrating chores so when you could finally have fun you really just wanna quit

that said a lot of the games i play solve this by just making the progression system so time limited that i spend all of my time trying to finish them as quickly as possible and then i consider maybe enjoying a game i paid a lot of money for if im done with the chores in a month or two before the next set of chores arrives. and im only doing the chores because i paid good money for them!!
