tonight ive learned that text boxes in rpg maker games can push a steam deck to single digit framerates from what appears to be cpu load and im incredibly fascinated at what in hell could be causing this

if anyone has fun solution ideas im open to them. it's not realtime or anything so it's fine, it's just kinda odd that it's happening, in a way that makes me think "oh so rpg maker vx ace does something super incorrect with text rendering and proton/wine/whatever just can't deal with it"

So, one workaround, at least for VX Ace games, is to go into the options and make text speed instant and turn off text sounds, if those options are available (these are among the spread of default options RPG Maker provides, so most games should have them). The letter-by-letter text printing and sound effects are specifically what bogs down proton. Of course, text pacing and sound effects add a lot of charm to games, so it's a definite loss, but at least the game becomes playable.

Can confirm. I tried playing SLARPG on Steam Deck and had to do this to get it to stop lagging. Having the text crawl enabled also seemed to make the game crash after a couple minutes.
