i decided to get back into journaling a few weeks ago so, as one does, i went into my closet and dug out my unused-notebooks-from-the-last-decade box. this time, i chose what i believe is the Baron Fig Confidant, version 2? i’m looking through my emails and can’t find any notice of ever buying this. maybe i got it in new york five years ago when i did a stationery tour day? maybe someone gave it to me? has anyone ever given me a notebook?
god, i remember first heading about Baron Fig on the Pen Addict blog in college, and then on their podcast in 2017 i think? i also remember there being some beef between Brad Dowdy and the Baron Fig founders, although i’m not sure if that was real or just entertainment.
what i am sure about is that the original Baron Fig Confidant paper was godawful if you used fountain pens or anything inky. like, I remember it being worse than old Field Notes in terms of bleeding and feathering. this is why i’m so surprised to have seen one in my notebook box, surely i learned my lesson back in 2017???
thankfully, whatever they did in version 2 worked, and the paper is much better now. my fine nib YStudio admittedly isn’t much of a threat, but it also handled my bold Lamy 2000 and TWSBI Eco without complaining. the fake linen cover is nice, the ribbon is color, and i enjoy the smaller-than-A5 size for bedwriting.
it has dot grid though, and dot grid still sucks for journaling nearly a decade later. gimme lines please.
