hi, i assume if you're reading this you know about fonts, so: what's a font that is good and readable, but maybe looks like the old MS-DOS terminal font? or any other system bitmap font from the era. i'm looking for a retro looking bitmap font that has good marks for readability.

right now this website i'm working on uses ModernDOS9x16.ttf, which is a direct translation of the IBM PC ROM font to a TTF. it's stylish, but i have no idea if it's particularly good for readability.

anyway, thanks. plz rebug or comment if you have any suggestions or advice!

here's the website as it is right now: https://blazingrender.net/

in reply to @erysdren's post:

i rather like Nouveau IBM as a drop-in replacement for the old IBM font, adapted as a vectorized font that can scale to any size. https://www.dafont.com/nouveau-ibm.font - there's another font that people like that tries to round it off somewhat, instead of it looking octagonal, but i find that muddies the shapes somewhat at smaller sizes.

[edit] Going with a vectorized version would also prevent you from needing to clamp the text size to the size of the browser window (I tried using Firefox's zoom-in/zoom-out functions and found they wouldn't do anything for several steps).

i forgot to reply earlier, but i ended up going with Nouveau IBM as a replacement for the bitmap font!! it's very cool, gives a nice "retro but upgraded" look that i'm definitely aiming for. thank u!!

if being bitmap is a hard requirement, Terminus is quite legible IMO. otherwise, there's a whole swathe of monospaced fonts out there to choose from - courier, ibm plex mono, iosevka (although none of those are particularly bitmappy in their design) are but a few
