always gonna be a little sad that so much of masahiro sakurai's time in game development was devoted to super smash bros because i think that man has a knack for making monstrously cracked single-player-focused action games that he ended up not getting to flex nearly enough

kirby super star and kid icarus uprising are actual masterworks of game design

I would be sadder if I didn't know he's been getting royalties from Smash sales since Brawl

all his freaky little games are so good, freakin METEOS man, one of the best puzzle games ever made!!!

it's a good one, and one I wish would come back in some modern form... that said, Mizuguchi & co. made several games without Sakurai and they're all quite aimless, so I don't know that I'd even trust them to bring it back

also relevant to the current discussion: one of the comments on Sakurai's old semi-secret Meteos dev blog: "hiring Sakurai to make a vs. puzzle game is like buying a Ferrari to drive to the corner store"

It seems the consensus from him and his peers is that he's "the only one" who can do Smash, which is... I don't know, weird to hear? Not saying that he doesn't do a good job, but like, I don't expect Miyamoto to be the only one capable of making a Mario game. Feels like he could've said no at some point, or raised a successor or even a long-term team, but maybe that went out the window when he left HAL.

oh that's really funny actually. get the bag man. but yeah no it's not because of worries about his own creative fulfillment or anything I have that opinion for entirely selfish reasons of wanting to play more games that I like LOL
