it's so hard to put into words how excited(?) i am for the anime adaptation of oshi no ko. this manga has permanently ruined my psyche, i've been unable to stop thinking about this absolute trashfire of a masterpiece shitshow. it's destroying my life and i hate it but i also very much admire it but also it can go fuck itself forever but also i am glad it exists
oshi no ko is a very very good story wrapped around the insurmountable flaw that is the manga's core premise
like okay, my mom and dad have worked in film my entire life, i was raised on set, and have worked dozens of hours on professional film productions both as a child, an actor, working the slate in one occasion, holding a boom mike (never do this) and sometimes just being there to steal snacks. so i can say that this is the single most accurate representation of the entertainment industry i have ever seen. it advertises itself as "the dark side of the entertainment industry!!" but it actually just is brutally honest about it. it's not all evil producers swindling people or whatever, it's just like any other industry, people working hard to make something good. even when ego gets in the way, it understands that it's rooted in the core desire to just make good art, that everyone involved in the production shares. it's really refreshing to have a more grounded actual understanding of how the entertainment field works and a story set within it.
but also it's like, about a murder conspiracy surrounding a mid-tier idol and the protagonists are her biggest fans who were reincarnated into her children and kept their fully adult brains as children and are like, amped about getting to be mothered by their favorite idol????? who are now trying to investigate her murder?????????????
and it would be INFINITELY stronger if you cut that entire plot element, but also like, you can't just CUT those parts because... i mean jesus lord a hypothetical Oshi no Ko without that moment where Ruby turns around in the river would be a MUCH worse product it just would that moment gave me fucking chills i think about it constantly. and that moment where Aqua ruminates on his split identity and how he's losing the line between him, Aquamarine Hoshino, and the role he has to play in public is a really fascinating exploration of persona in celebrity?? and these parts only work because of the context which is the FUCKING CREEPY BAD SHIT. GOD I HATE THIS MANGA
also i hate that i look like ruby hoshino to a shockingly high degree
