It's a secure boot thing, which is loaded before everything else, and for Reasons Microsoft signs all the images, even for Linux. A long time ago they warned they needed to change something in it that would mess up dual booting and most distros updated to not be affected, but not all, and of course if you're running an older version of a distro you wouldn't get that change anyway. Microsoft was supposed to check if an older Linux was installed before charging ahead, but that didn't happen and here you and many others are!
hm i see... i wouldn't think mint 21 is particularly old but what do i know. suppose i should upgrade to 22 now and avoid future trouble
Looks like Mint of any version will be affected, as its upstream, Ubuntu, never implemented the changes. Oops.
