somewhat nifty

there's a scam going around, not sure who's orchestrating it but it seems to be pretty widespread at this point. the scam is called "samba". unsuspecting linux users get tempted by wild promises of being able to share files across a network, something that any experienced computer user knows is clearly impossible. the victim will then be led into a rabbit hole of multiple helpful-looking websites and youtube videos and stack exchange posts, each of which providing a very slightly different set of shell commands and lines to add to samba.conf that are definitely guaranteed to work for certain. the key is to continually give the user hope that they just need to try one more time doing a couple of things differently and then it will definitely totally work and not just display an error saying "permission denied" and no other information whatsoever. this is a lie. nothing is possible on computers and you are a fool and a mark for even allowing yourself to imagine otherwise. still you plow on until your body and mind are useless mush, unable to put up any kind of fight. then they break into your house i guess
