Every year I start thinking "you know, I didn't get to do much gaming last year, but I enjoyed what I did get to do, I'd like to do more of that". And then by the time the new year rolls around I realize I didn't. In 2023, I ended up getting a decent amount of games, both new ones I was super excited for and older ones in sale bundles or just because I really wanted them. But I didn't get to play a ton because life was busy, and all that. I got several games I barely touched - I still never finished the tutorial area of Tears of the Kingdom, and haven't even started Armored Core VI. I have gotten into Pikmin 4 around the end of the year, and I beat both Metroid Prime Remastered (100%) and Super Mario Bros. Wonder (not 100%, and technically only co-op but I still count it). And the major timesink of the later part of the year was getting into Halo MCC, after having only ever played the original split-screen co-op on my fiancee's OG Xbox, and even that was only in the last few years and occasionally. And now I actually kinda like the FPS genre, whoops. (The live service bullshit is still kinda there but it seems they've largely moved on from adding to it so it's more just a ton of content I have to unlock gradually, but I'm not burned out on the games yet and haven't actually beaten any but the original so far.)
This year I have a bit of a structure I'm going to try to work with, and it's kinda simple - I just want to beat at least as many games as I add to my backlog. That will be, at bare minimum, three games a month from PS+ and whatever gets added to Nintendo Switch Online libraries. (If I end up upgrading to a higher tier of PS+ this year, or more likely, getting Game Pass for a month or so at a time, I won't count those as in my backlog like the NSO games do, simply because that would get out of hand fast.) I'm on good pace to finish Pikmin 4 before too much of the year is out, and three of the five games in MCC I have yet to finish are also pretty close to done. There's also a lot of fairly short games I could knock out just to clear a bunch of room for others, or at least play a game that doesn't have a defined end so that I can say I cleared it. Ultimately I'm not super pressed to finish the whole backlog or anything, I just want to give a bunch of different things an honest try at the very least. And ultimately, I want to just have fun, even if it's from replaying a game I already know well. And even if I don't jive with a game I try, it'll give me ideas of what I might enjoy revisiting. Been getting an itch for going back to old favorites like Banjo-Kazooie, and if the original N64 Smash Bros. gets put on NSO you know I'm going to want to start my stream series idea I had of going through every SSB as a single player experience to get an idea how they compare. "Smashing All the Bros", I'm calling it.
As for music, this is mostly an afterthought since I usually talk about that more on my music account, but I have to say... Was it just me, or was 2023 kind of a meh year for the sort of music I like? Like... I've seen people say it was a rough year for music in general, but even in the more obscure prog metal type stuff I listen to it was kind of a bummer. Like, I don't know if I have a top ten albums list I could make. Maybe top five, but even then a lot of it was kind of easy to brush past even if it was good enough to say I recommend listening to it. And a lot of things that I tried to listen to were just downright forgettable. I'd be happy to take any recommendations for albums that I might like from last year to add to that list, just keep in mind that I'm mainly into prog rock/metal with some more mainstream rock and pop mixed in sometimes. As for music of 2024 I'm looking forward to... Really at the moment I'm just super interested in the upcoming Caligula's Horse album, Concrete Grace. There's a few other things I'm maybe somewhat interested in but that's the main one I'm actually excited for. Here's hoping for more to be announced though!
