It runs at a smooooth 4 frames per second right now and the core game loop is written in applescript (which calls out to python for most of the logic). I need applescript to make double buffering work / check whether a file is selected. Running the loop in applescript means I only pay applescript's stunningly high startup cost (0.2 seconds??) once.
Anyway uhhhh this is all I've been doing for the past two days.
