i don't want a "how to make epic PS1 style models!!!" tutorial i want to see how they actually made 3D models for games from 1994-2004. like where did they start out from? a box? a single plane? i'm interested in knowing...

in the early 3d fighters from like 1994, Tekken, battle arena toahinden, virtua fighter etc the models are composed of multiple independent piece that overlap instead of a single discrete mesh, and nothing is textured except for the faces I believe. so like each leg is two or three cylinders, the feet are boxes, the pelvis is a box, etc, and they only really model the spots where they need more detail like the torso and head. I think they did box modeling for that, I've seen that referred to as "old fashioned" in CG forums
