ahh, I don't do improv, but my friend does and has a group show! I thought about getting into it but I've heard some bad cultish vibes at the local improv groups around here so I never took the first step. I've watched quite a bit though so I know you're all excellent and really giving it your all :eggbug-smile-hearts:

yeah :unyeah: so it's one of those that preys on newcomers because they 'promise to get you on stage' (getting flashbacks to scammers promising new time writers they're guaranteed to get published if they do X) but it's like a badly run thing and they force you to sell the tickets yourself while also taking a cut so it's ALSO a pyramid scheme-ish thing. What's worse is that the culty people have connections to some of the bigger players in the scene who aren't aware or choose to turn a blind eye and they just use their charisma to dazzle all the newcomers. I've also been told their coaching methods aren't really correct--they come from a drama background, and so they force the improv people to stay in scenes way longer than they feel comfortable and then shout at them for 'not being able to make the audience cry'.

But! There are some really good improv clubs regardless, and I don't want to denigrate the art--every single show I've been to has shown me the most wonderful, sweetest, smartest, and funniest people in the world. I went to the Melbourne club and saw their city's Big Hoo-Haa (which originated in Perth), and my friend is in the Wellington Hoo-Haa too! He said the Melbourne club plays improv a completely different way--they jump faster, they have a better director/MC who's exceptionally good at reading the audience and knows when to cut a section short, and I was just watching and learning the craft during the song sections and how they tried to guide the story etc.

I will always be here to cheer you guys on:eggbug-smile-hearts:
