finally got around to unpacking all1 my childhood bionicle that I brought back from my parents' house over Christmas, and loosely bundled them by color here... there are hundreds if not possibly thousands of hours of joyful memories wrapped up in these little guys for me. and after buying a few new sets earlier this year, I can safely say I've entered my adult-fan-of-lego phase at long last.

It seems like there's already been a lot of bionicle nostalgia in the zeitgeist the past couple years so maybe the market is already tapped... but I REALLY wanna do a podcast, or at least maybe an essay series, doing a critical analysis of the stories and sets. there's so much to unpack!

this children's toy from the year 2001 has:

  • truly weird gender stuff (and a shockingly high proportion of childhood fans who later came out as trans/nonbinary)
  • extremely thick communist overtones
  • THE dream (you know the one)
  • probably the best and coolest third-act plot twist I've ever seen, even still to this date
  • giant mechs (!!)
  • inherently grey area between the mechanical / biological
  • frankly wild systems of incarceration
  • some really bizarre stuff with class and race that hasn't been talked about nearly enough

anyway, the ground is fertile for analysis and I wanna dive headfirst into it... a new project is calling me... but I have so many other projects already..... :eggbug-nervous:

1actually this is only about half or two thirds of it, there's still a big chunk left at my parents' house that wouldn't fit with me on the plane
