by subtracting who it is from who it isn't, or who it isn't from who it is, (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference or deviation
the headmate's guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the headmate from who it is to who it isn't, and arriving from who it wasn't to who it now is. consequently, who it is, is now who it wasn't, and it follows that who it was, is now who it isn't.
