like people use them to try to be less "gross" and more "polite" and sound very scientific but like

  • "feces/excrement" verses "poop"
  • "flatus" verses "farts"
  • "vomit" verses "puke"
  • "anus" verses "butt"

in all these cases, the technical term sounds way grosser to me than the casual term, and inexplicably turns my stomach more than the casual term, despite them referring to the same thing

i for one am all for using more casual terms in scientific communication. you'd better believe that if i'm info dumping to you about cool science stuff, i'm not going to say that "the stomus and anus of a jellyfish are colocated", i'm going to say that its mouth is also its butt
