in reply to @spiders's post:

hi! we're in the process of writing one called Witchy Keys, because we set up a Linux phone a while back and identified it as a gap. we have the basics working for us, but we're trying to figure out licensing stuff before releasing the code.

the one everyone seems to use is Onboard, but we looked into it and we really cannot recommend it - it has a very long startup time, and we found the code badly organized. plus its emphasis is on function, not form; Witchy Keys is meant to do both. from a brief glance at the project website it does seem like Onboard gets a little more maintenance today than it did a year ago, so try it if you want https://launchpad.net/onboard

thank you.

the thing i'm going to use onboard for is making a custom keyboard lay out for toki pona, as a prototype to something me and artemis want to work on eventually- ilo Toko, an onscreen keyboard for toki pona input, optimized for eye tracker users.

doing this will involve a lot of xml editing and the documentation for it in onboard isn't that good, but i do seem to have at least found it at all so that's a good start http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~onboard/onboard/main/view/head:/docs/layouts.html
