Secret of Kells is still my fave of the three, but that's mostly because I went to a monastery-run boarding school and so everything having to do with the monks was intensely relatable. They really do be like that lmao

The one bit that I didn't find very true to my experience is that the abbot I knew was nowhere near as "because I said so" about things, and that's actually somewhat backed up by the Rule of St. Benedict, exactly because you have to engage younger members into decision making processes to get their buy in, which they knew just as well 1500 years ago as they do today. There's still plenty of authority to "because I said so" when necessary, to be clear, but it's supposed to be avoided when possible.

Huh it seems like the monks of Kells might not have been under Benedictine rule tho, it's not clear to me what rule they followed, but their sister abbey in Iona didn't adopt Benedictine rule until the 13th century, so it would make sense that Kells didn't use it either when the Book was created
