a workaround for this, at least for cohost posts (and i think markdown accepts this too), is to use the "white-space: pre-wrap" styling to allow multi-spaces, though that can be annoying,, i usually type it out like
<span style="white-space: pre-wrap">hi this text has spaces</span>
tried messing with giving the whole post the pre-wrap thingy but it made the new-lines between paragraphs take up a lot of extra space x.x ymmv
I also find myself wanting to use extra spaces sometimes, and yeah it sux >.<
