i think that for the false distinction between songs and poems to be broken down,a lot about how this society views" poetry" would have to change.{poetry would need to become a a popular and "norma^"l art form again practiced and enjoyed casually by people, and not a weird obscure thing that has a lot of prestige and academia and snobbishness around it. i also think that "light verse" (humorous poetry), erotic poetry, and other genre's of poetry (that aren't necessarily "deep" works that discuss trauma or politics or other visceral emotions, but are instead simply trying to create a mood) are important in bridging the gap between a lot of songwriting and poetry
the other aspect i think creates a false divide between songwriting and poetry is how most poetry aside from slam/spoken word poetry is seemingly not really "performed". alot of it exists solely on a page.to the point where a lot of people who haven't read that much poetry think most poetry is just normal text but with line breaks, the line break as a typographical artifacthas become an integral part of poetry reflecting how so much of it exists on the page.
all that said, the breaking down of that distinction in the cultural consciousness is not something i actually care that much about because as a sometimes songwriter and poet both i know how much work goes into both of them and how different they are in a lot of respects.
