i don't drink coffee, because it tastes kind of gross to me, and anything except instant is too complicated and requires fancy devices and a lot of extra work vs tea

but i must admit, that i frequently watch james hoffman, out of a sort of morbid curiosity.

in this world where i am constantly being told that i am doing things the wrong way, that there's some better way i could be doing stuff, that my technique is bad, that i'm bad for doing something a particular way,

there's a perverse enjoyment in peaking into the world of coffee insanity and safely knowing that at least here the omnipresent "you aren't doing it good enough" mentality can't harm me, because i'm just not doing it at all. plus, the funny coffee man is funny, and does wacky things on camera for our amusement

in reply to @spiders's post:

tea making can also go down a wretched whirlpool of "you aren't doing it good enough"

but i feel like those people are more of a minority among tea drinkers, and it's less pervasive, especially because a lot of us who just drink bagged tea most of the time are also aware of higher quality teas and teaware. we just save it for cosy or special occasions.

and with tea there's less of a culture of buying endless gadgets. if you want to go down the tea rabbit hole you can get like, infusers, teapot+cups (the designs of which have remained unchanged for hundreds or thousands of years), and maybe the most specialized equipment you might end up with is a matcha whisk.

almost nobody is out there trying to get you to buy some tea equivalent of an aeropress

i straight up just never tried coffee tbh. it smells kinda good and that is the extent to which i will enjoy it. i could probably enjoy it if i tried, and drowned out the bitterness with milk and sugar, but i just dont really care enough to

i did try it like, exactly once, for some reason my teacher shortly before graduation was making some for students so i tried some. tasted horrible, naturally
