my city's having a big debate about whether to keep allowing them and whether to charge rent, and it blows my mind how many ~urbanists~ are cheering for low-or-no-rent to be charged to businesses occupying the public street with private tables. the businesses are just gonna turn around and charge people rent (in the form of required purchases) to sit on public land. i get the argument that they're "better than parking" but they're like, the second-to-worst use of the space behind parking. how about a bike lane? public tables that are free to sit at? more sidewalk? some trees? anything but more rent-seeking
