Depends on your mood and tastes, but a few pulled from scrolling through my library:

  • Patlabor 2: anime political thriller, and you don't need to have watched the first film.
  • Lessons of Darkness: Herzog shows us Kuwait in the wake of the First Gulf War. Beautiful and horrible.
  • The Wicker Man: a pillar of horror cinema, despite not really being traditionally scary in any sense. But it sticks to your bones.

I don't know you and what you've seen, so none of these will be deep cuts, but a few of the best movies I've seen in the last couple years:

  • Do The Right Thing. This is the movie that really put Spike Lee on the map.
  • Ordinary People. My friends and I had been watching a lot of old best picture nominees. We all saw Raging Bull, and thought, "This is an incredibly well made movie. How did this not win best picture that year, and this movie none of us have ever heard of, Ordinary People, won instead?" We all separately watched Ordinary People within the next couple weeks and agreed that it is in fact the better movie.
  • Night of the Hunter. Classic horror movie from 1955. If you've ever seen a character with "LOVE" and "HATE" tattooed on their knuckles, that's a reference to this.
