i started touhou 10 two weeks ago and i swear stage 4 in this has given me more trouble than a lot of other touhou games have, and i can't figure out why. stages 1-3 in this game are nothing and i can get through them pretty easily, but then stage 4 just picks away at me enough to struggle with it. i've made it past stage 4 maybe 3 or 4 times by now in the almost 5 hours i've put in so far.
in comparison, i checked and touhou 7 and 8 both took me around 7 hours to clear, and that's with multiple characters. 6 doesn't track playtime so i'm not sure about that one.

the continue system in this game probably doesn't help with this - it's probably my least favourite thing about this game which is a shame. i feel like this continue system turns everything into a grind where i can't make a single mistake, and i'm only playing on Normal! i'm actually getting frustrated with this game, and none of the other touhou games have done that! i cleared 9's story mode with every character and had a great time. i'm at least glad to know that this continue system is only around for 3 games.

i was really surprised when i looked at what people said about this game, and i saw a lot of people saying it was really easy and recommending it as a starting point for the series. maybe those people are just playing it differently from me? i mentioned this to a friend and i was told i should really be using bombs as much as i can in this one, but i feel like all my deaths in this game are things i have trouble predicting or timing a bomb against, like accidentally dodging into a bullet or moving just the wrong way in a tight space.

i know there's patches that can bring the previous continue system into this game + the other two that work like this, and maybe i should just try and give that a shot. i want to beat this game and move on to 11, but i feel like it's gonna take me ages just to do that at the rate i'm going.
did anyone else have this much trouble with this stage or is it just me getting tripped up by this?

Stage 4's are always a sudden step up in difficulty, but I definitely felt it more with this continue system. MoF is probably the "easiest" one that uses it, which is why it gets recommended over the ones with limited continues, but it definitely forces you to identify and overcome your roadblocks upfront.

I recommend watching your own replays! It's what helped me with it when a particular stage got me stuck.

aya is a really tough stage 4 boss! the previous comment mentioned the general difficulty spike in stage 4, but also aya is just kinda... like that. stage 5 is easier in my opinion. hang in there!

also, i wouldn't put too much stock in which games people think are "easy" or not. there's going to be some games you're stronger at and some games where you're weaker. for example, a lot of people like to rag on TD for being too easy, but i honestly think that game is very hard.
