i know money and the economy aren't real but if enough people decide to act like something is real then it basically becomes real and starts to assert force on other peoples' lives. christianity, for example, or mimes. what i'm wondering is, how do you kill something powered by belief.

I've thought a lot about how to go about replacing it with something that works better. I think the most likely scenario is that it just has to run its course and implode, then rebuild from the ruins. I don't think we have the time needed for the gradual route of legislation, and frankly I don't think that route even works, too many opportunities for bad actors to take it in the wrong direction, however that does at least speed us up towards option a.

Another possibility is to go start from scratch somewhere right now on a small scale and try to grow it. This is VERY hard to do because you would need to engage with the existing systems to obtain land and to trade for goods, which would corrupt the new system into slowly getting eaten back by the old (part of why capitalism is so successful (successful in terms of being widespread, not in terms of being good for anyone)). This route requires huge amounts of starting capital for resources, but if you can do it all in one go and then immediately become self-sustaining then it has a chance. However, as soon as it's doing too well for itself it will be invaded in the name of "freedom" to get access to those sweet resources you've cultivated.
