oh also! i wish I had taken pictures of it, but there is a really peculiar thing going on around our front door. The steps that we just removed from our house were not the first steps. Our front door is pretty high off the ground. We are close to a river, so I think that is why a lot of the houses in our area have high front steps. Ours is a 6 step. Anyways, right under our front door there is like a wooden trap door that looks like it leads into our basement? I am wondering if I could find historical photos of our house because it is really strange. I am figuring it was some sort of entrance to the basement/crawl space that you could access from under the original steps?

It isn't at all like those big swing out door type basements. This was flush against the wall of the house, but it was a wooden door while the rest of the foundation is stone/cement.
It isn't a full sized door. Only a couple feet tall, you would have to be on your hands and knees to crawl through.
I was trying to find pictures of what it looks like and I saw houses that have basement entrances for their front door and I wonder if maybe it is leftovers from something like that? but I feel like a basement entrance would be kinda weird to have around here.

i would go down to the basement and see if I could look at it from the inside, but it's at the very far corner of the basement and we have an unfinished basement and it's scary down there :(

Could it be for a coal shoot or something similar? It sounds like it might be a little larger than the ones I've seen but when I hear "small door near the entrance that goes straight to the basement" I can't not guess a coal shoot 🀷

i think you are right! that is so cool! I just looked it up and it looks like ours is quite big compared to the others I am seeing. But now that makes me think maybe the current entrance of our house isn't the original entrance. I know way before we lived here it used to be a two story house, but the second floor had a fire so they tore the second floor off and just closed it up to make it a one story house.

Just ripped it off!!! Incredible. As frustrating as old houses having Weird Issues can be (altho: everything I hear about new houses tells me it's more like "houses have weird issues", lol), the history adds so many fun and lovable aspects to why it's weird. Our house has a full window between two rooms. This is most easily explained by an addon, but the more you look at the areas involved the weirder that explanation is (altho still likely true)

Yeah! I have seen videos from home inspectors showing huge errors in brand new houses.

Ya know how a lot of houses have a window facing outside over their kitchen sink? Our kitchen sink has a window viewing another room that was added onto the house lol
