ah! looked outside to see if it was raining yet and saw a little sparrow hopping around on my sidewalk. I live in the city so I get lots of house sparrows visiting me, but I noticed some white stripes on his head. Looked it up and it's a white crowned sparrow!

So far identified birds that visit my feeders now:

  • House sparrows
  • Cardinals
  • Blue Jays
  • Black eyed Juncos
  • American goldfinches (haven't seen any this year yet tho, could also be that they aren't their full color yet so i haven't realized)
  • House finches (I first thought these were Pine Grosbeaks, but I think I misidentified them)
  • Starlings. Lots of Starlings. I no longer put out suet because the starlings fight very loudly over it

edit: we also have red breasted robins and morning doves in the area, but I never see them at the feeders. I've been watching the robins collect nesting materials :) Morning doves love splashing around in puddles in the alleyway after it rains

morning doves prefer eating off the ground to eating at feeders! i always dump some seeds on the ground for them when i fill my birdfeeders and they love it. i was always hearing them but didn't see them until i looked that up, haha. now they like to putter around in the yard. i like the burbling noise they make when they get startled and take off. and they're so pretty!

jealous of your juncos! i haven't seen any at my feeders yet

I have heard that before! I have a mesh ball feeder and whenever the birds feed off of it, some of the seeds get shaken out of the feeder an onto the ground. I also added and extra feeder nearby that is lower to the ground. I actually haven't been seeing as many morning doves in the area as I usually do. They seem to be more active in the summer, so I am curious if they will start coming around more for that.

I think juncos are a little more active in the winter, at least in my area. My main birds over the winter were jays and juncos.
