how dare they write an open letter protesting our sponsorship of their conference?
how dare they share it widely for signatures?
in all seriousness, the demands aren't highly polished or anything (we didn't write it) but it's a solid letter that we're proud to be the third signer of
the fact that NixCon organizers have:
- announced a controversial sponsor ~1-2 weeks before the date of the conference
- saw the community backlash in response to it
- backpedalled not because of community backlash, but due to venue contract requirements
- proceeded to do the exact same thing, with the exact same sponsor, with the exact same timeframe again 6 months later
is a level of incompetence that is making it really hard for me to trust not just NixCon, but the wider Nix stewardship structure that doesn't seem particularly interested in pushing back against this behaviour. immensely disappointing behaviour on display from all fronts here
oh and in case it wasn't clear - no, you should not accept funding from the war machine
granted, the above post is only reflected in a small portion of this overall, but everything else in here is worth considering as well. it paints a picture of a pretty dire situation, and it's unfortunate that it's come to a point where moderators and contributors are just done with it all. if you're at all invested in the Nix project and it's continued operation and development, i'd recommend you give this one a read, and potentially consider becoming a signatory. i expect this will end up causing some volatility in the community for a while - unfortunate, but it sure seems like it needs to happen, else nothing will get better.
here's hoping some good can come of this
