“The history of the Palestinian short story in Arabic is marked by many women writers, from the innovative works of mid-century authors like Samira Azzam (1927-1967); to, more than a generation later, Liana Badr; to the more recent innovations of form and language by Maya Abu al-Hayat, Adania Shibli, Sheikha Helawy, and many others.”

“As we witness the unfolding genocide and the global rise of people to confront it, we are birthing a new world. Queer and Trans individuals have always been pivotal in world-building. Particularly, Queer and Trans Palestinians are leading the movement for a free Palestine and a world without systemic oppression.

We are inviting submissions from Queer and Trans Palestinians to envision a utopia through essays, short stories, poetry, and visual arts. We strongly encourage previously unpublished writers and artists to submit, even if this is their first time writing. We also welcome submissions in Arabic, which will be translated by the editor of the collection.

A $200 honorarium will be awarded for selected submissions. This call is open to Queer and Trans Palestinians worldwide. The collection will be edited by Mx. Yaffa, a queer and trans Palestinian whose work and research focus on utopia building, particularly within a queer and trans Muslim context of the global majority.

Submissions will be reviewed on a rolling basis, with a tentative deadline of January 1, 2024. Selected participants will have one month to complete their submissions. Our goal is to make this collection available in early spring.

While previously published works are welcome, preference will be given to unpublished pieces.”
