This doesn’t prove anything about it not appearing in any form elsewhere, earlier, but my initial awareness of this phrase was in the context of somebody posting that in earnest about video game difficulty and “gitting gud”, in relation to “hard video games” like souls likes or something along those lines, and then it becoming a copypasta from people making fun of its over-seriousness.
But the initial tweeting of it was not afaik a reference to anything, it was that person’s earnest thoughts at the time in response to a games journalist using cheats while reviewing a game. It is certainly possible that similar phrases have appeared elsewhere before though.
Could it have been from a fan project, like a rom hack or something?
yeah im pretty sure the thing i remember from earthbound was just that video i linked that i probably mistook for hidden content and false-memoried it into a gameinformer issue. it’s still intensely fucking weird though because of how strong it was in my brain when i posted this lmao
