just got hit by an urban fantasy game with "every player draws a card to see how their marriage is going" as part of character creation. i love ttrpgs

I think Defiant RPG stumbled out of a parallel universe where urban fantasy soap opera never went out of style. quickstart is free on Itch and it's basically a full game by itself

i am a hack fraud with insufficient WoD experience to be talking about this, BUT
It takes an angle of pseudo-divinity and aristocracy for its protagonists, you're explicitly already in a position of power at the start of the game. You write up underlings that you can basically use as part of your character sheet, and can use your spouse in a similar way

Mechanically it's FATE-inspired with very small dice pools and multiple degrees of success at a cost. no dedicated combat system, emphasis on short descriptive traits. also a metacurrency to trigger character-specific powers, but you need to accept a species-specific challenge in order to recharge it

There’s setting conceits that I think I would rework in a game I ran (mainly the enforced micro isolationism post apocalypse of the world?) but I’m honestly a fan, it has some good juice and I’m happy I backed it
