started and beat Space Marine (2011) today :)

it's a game ive had on my radar forever and have owned and originally tried to play on a shitty laptop back in like.... 2017. today however i played the whole campaign from start to finish in about.... 8 hours taking breaks here and there to do weekend chores and cook. generally an enjoyable game. probably a 7/10 for me but i'm also a fan of the setting so that's maybe a bit biased.

story wise it's kinda what you'd expect from any 40k book or game. our heroes show up to do some violence and have a thing to protect but end up discovering some hidden plot behind the starting plot and things degrade until our heroes can stop it. better story line than dawn of war 3, honestly feels a bit like dawn of war 1 story vibes in a good way.

the action is mostly the same from start to finish. you shoot aliens do doom 2016 style glory kills to heal and stomp from objective to objective. you get a variety of different weapons but theres a couple that are definitely better than others (cough cough lascannon/stormbolter combo).

the environment stays kinda.... same-y when youre outdoors but its a mass produced busted up hive city/factories so like.... it makes sense? i liked coming across little groups of guardsmen holding out all across the story. the defensive segments and the really fun jetpack parts broke up the otherwise monotonous walk down this path and kill everything gameplay. this game definitely did get the like... proper scale of just how big everything is built in the 40k universe. super tall ceilings, artillery shells three times larger than our already massive super soldiers, giant statues, etc.

tl;dr i enjoyed it and would recommend it to other people into warhammer or curious about the 40k universe. there's definitely places it could be better but its not like a slog like dawn of war 3. space marine 2 is actually getting a sequel on almost the 13th anniversary of the original later this year and this one isnt too time intensive to clear before then. (also a certain chapter that is very near and dear to my heart makes an appearance in the very end of the game and i literally gasped when i saw their distinct chapter colors! nvn )
