if you think mechs being piloted by a neutral link is even half as cool as manual controls, you're a fucking fool. i would 100% of the time have some jackass puppeteer a metal frame in a futile attempt to make it emulate human movement over achieving perfect human/machine synchronicity. pacific rim you get an exception

get your hands OFF the magic brain-reading orbs and ONTO a series a series of switches, buttons, levers, and then if you're lucky, maybe a couple of flight sticks.

the Battletech/'Mechwarrior books are great because they dedicate like three entire paragraphs per chapter to just how good or terrible the pilot is at manipulating the foot pedals

pacific rim has the same number of steps getting in your way as manual controls because it replaced "figuring out how to connect to the machine" with "figuring out how to connect to your drift buddy"

the big o! my favorite psychological mecha anime, made by the team that did giant robo: the day the earth stood still

key inspirations were metropolis, tezuka, shotaro ishinomori's robot detective, isaac asimov, wizard of oz, and the 90s batman cartoon

one thing to note is that the first season is hand drawn and the second season, co-produced by cartoon network, is digital

there's also a really cute radio play written by the series writer and translated by the english localizer set roughly between the two seasons- if you ever want to read that i can hook you up
