something someone mentioned to me in a forum, that fortnite took the culture of modding as self expression and fully commercialized it. it wasnt the first but the most enjoyment you get from it comes from outward personal expression - which is heavily regulated by epic.

I only got into the game due to being able to play as meowskulls, and fennix took months to get because he would only appear in the store one day every few months. fortnites entire cosmetics economy is built on fomo that you buy into. eventually the grind became so obnoxious that I quit a battlepass mid season.

so yeah, its a funny inversion of that where you can download a model rip from the source filmmaker workshop and then rig it for ut2k4

There's a similar observation from an Errant Signal video about TF2 and Overwatch, but less explicitly about commercialization than it is about maintaining a more tightly moderated if less expressive and creative community (i.e. Overwatch having sprays as a series of unlockables vs TF2 unofficial servers letting you put Rogue the Bat with her tits out on any surface you want).
