Here it is! It's pretty basic, but perfect for cold nights. The portion size is based around the standard 3L boxes of discount wines.
Ingredients:
- 3L Red Wine
- 6 to 12 tablespoons of sugar
- Three oranges
- 6 star anise
- 10 cloves
- 6 cinnamon sticks
- A pinch of nutmeg
- 1/2 Cup of brandy, or mild whiskey (i.e. not Islay!)
Method:
Cut the oranges into slices, and combine all ingredients into a large pot. It's best to start with a half volume of sugar, so you can bring it up to your desired sweetness.
Stie until the sugar is dissolved, then place on a low heat until it starts to simmer.
Remember to leave the lid on the pot to stop evaporation.
Once it's at a low simmer taste for your desired sweetness, if it needs adjusting now is the best time.
Leave simmering for 30 minutes to 2 hours, remember to keep that heat low! (We don't want evaporation)
Once the time has passed give it a quick taste, it should be ready!
Strain or ladle out the orange, anise, cloves and cinnamon.
Serve! (Preferably with friends!)
