Funny cause not having to constantly have a take about current events is a feature to me, not a bug.

Edit, which I hope shows retroactively on shares: since this got seen by so many more people than I ever thought/hoped it would, I want to add this.
First: It has been pointed out to me that my interpretation of OOP's post was uncharitable at best. I never wanted this to be about dogpiling on them, definitely don't do it.

Second: I think this post came across as me being callous or even gleeful about not having an opinion and being indifferent to tragedy. I regret that, I am not indifferent to it, and I have lots of opinions about it. The part I stand by is that I don't think I should be compelled to post them because they are fundamentally uneducated (although getting better as I read more about it from people on here). And I don't necessarily think people should feel like they are entitled to know everyone else's opinion about everything that's going on in the world.

OK that's all, sorry

i don't think i've found anyone on here who disagrees with me on the fundamentals of the situation. i don't live there or have any other particular insight to contribute so why should i?

meanwhile, the other day, my mom has asked me about this stuff for the first time, and i spent like two hours or whatever explaining some of the history i know and my takes on the situation, and now she seems to be on board. that seems much more productive

one of the things that's nice about cohost as an "alternative" social media platform is that it's fairly safe to assume that no one's relying on it for news. news isn't what most people are here for, and that's fine! there's so many other places

i just don't understand how it's more productive to go on a rant about how complicated it is to write good alt text and therefore you're just not going to do it rather than just, say, giving it your best shot

and sure you certainly have the option of leaving people out, or just wishing there were better tools so you didn't have to do anything. but sometimes the world isn't ideal and you just have to try to treat other people decently as best you can. it's just a weird hostile attitude that i don't generally see on here

also people could just stop posting screenshots of text - it's not like there's a character limit here, we can even nicely format things
